STEM Society is back with another STEM Socialiser to kick off semester one! This evening was hosted along with AUT CSEA, CSI, and MAPS. It consisted of multiple games ranging from Kahoot, human knot, and musical mingle (like in Squid Game). Attendees got to win many different prizes, make new friends, learn about the STEM clubs available at AUT, and enjoy a delicious dinner.
For International Women's Day, we wanted to celebrate the successes and milestones of women and the progress we have made within the STEM field. We were incredibly honoured to have Lian from AMP New Zealand, Leilani from Deloitte, and Margaret from Fisher & Paykel Healthcare come in to talk about their experience being a woman and working in STEM - a male-dominated field and the progress that has been made in the industry. It was a heartwarming sight seeing everyone connect, make new friends, and talk about their own experiences.
We were pleased to invite Tom Wu - creator of GoBear AI to talk about the AI's function and its ability to help people apply for jobs quicker and easier, with a higher chance of getting an interview, and even the position! Tom and Everlee from GoBear AI helped many attendees navigate the free platform and connect with the students.
We were excited to run a med school seminar with two other UoA clubs - Nursing Association and Healthcare Technology Association, hosted by Suji Jeong, who came all the way from Canada to talk about med school opportunities in the US and Canada. The presentation went over scholarship opportunities for international students at medical schools in the US and Canada, the advantages of studying medicine abroad, and the opportunities it provides.
Due to popular demand from last year, our GitHub workshop made a return! This was once again ran by our Vice-President Jane. Attendees went through a series of content with Jane to learn about a few basic functions of Git and GitHub. A few activities and pop quiz questions were sprinkled in to keep the attendees on their toes. The evening ended with a game of Kahoot with the top 3 winners winning a GameOn voucher. And everyone was rewarded with some delicious pizza for their contribution and hard work.
Our engineering panel provided an opportunity for our attendees to learn about the different sectors within engineering that is available to them, network with industry professionals, and learn more about the engineering field. We were grateful to our amazing panelists: Kanat - a doctorate in engineering who has over 20 years in project management and build engineering, Melisa - a Market Product Manager at SICK Sensor Intelligence, Ellen - a Product Developer at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, and Chalu and Dong-mei - Software Developers at Sandfield.
The EY Site Tour gave attendees more of an insight into the different roles available at EY and the day-in-the-life of the staff - including developments in their role, projects and responsibilities, and company perks. Attendees had the opportunity to also network with the speakers from EY and build industry connections.
Starting off the semester strong with our beeswax wrap-making workshop hosted alongside Youth Climate Collective! A big thank you to Naoki from YCC for providing the materials and running the workshop. The students enjoyed creating their own beeswax wraps, learning about its benefits for the environment, and the uniqueness of the workshop itself.
We ran a LinkedIn workshop with the Employability Lab -- helping students learned how to leverage LinkedIn like a pro, platform secrets to stand out, received personalised 1:1 profile critiques, and were able to get professional headshots to elevate their presence. A big thank you to the team at Employability Lab for sharing their insights!
We wore pink and we watched Barbie! It was an evening full of girlhood, fun, and vibes. Students enjoyed the theatre-like experience with popcorn, drinks, and pizza provided. It was a great way to wind down as the semester starts to get busy.
Thank you to AUT Salsa for the collab and for teaching the class! It was a blast to learn salsa with a group of people where we were all a little bit out of our comfort zones. It was great to get away from studying for a bit and into the dance studio. Everyone was great and did their absolute best!
What an exciting event! Hosted alongside Women in Tech, we had a panel, a networking session and some great food. Thank you to our very inspiring panellists who spoke about their experiences and advice on being a woman in STEM: Ruby from Deloitte, Sophie from EY, Eloise from Fisher & Paykel and Izzy from WSP. We also had amazing industry guests from various companies visit to speak with students personally. Students had the chance to talk to women they wouldn't usually have the opportunity to and learn about different jobs. BIG thank you to our guests for taking time out of their busy lives!
Last social night of the year! Huge thank you to AUT Board Game Club for lending a hand. We're super grateful as it was the first time we tried something like this. It was a fun and chill night, playing different board games and enjoying some nice food with great company!
